The Making of the Spill Crochet Shawl

Curious about the specifics on how the Spill crochet shawl is constructed and stitch counts configured? Here I share the details of my design process.

The Spill crochet shawl is a crescent shape with a pattern worked in rows. It uses simple stitches: single crochet, double crochet, slip stitch. The pattern incorporates short rows on one side of the shawl so that the color shifts of the yarn (or stripes, if using multiple yarns) are off-center. Even though the design is simple, you can yield some dramatic results when you pair it with a showcasing yarn. I’ve had some people wondering about the specifics on how the shawl is constructed and how I came up with the stitch counts in the pattern. There … read more

It’s an intermediate-level pattern worked in sections, with each section worked perpendicular to the last. A unique and visually striking accessory for men and women. Finished scarf measures about 45” wide and 21” deep. It uses just one skein of Madelinetosh Prairie yarn, but you can use any lace or fingering weight yarn you like. I’d recommend sticking to a solid or semi-solid color for this one, because of the intricacy of the design. It includes post stitches and back-loop … read more

How to Block Lace Crochet

Blocking lace crochet is a wonderful way to finish your work and enhance your project's stitch design. Here's the simple 3-step process that I use.

When you block a lace crochet item, your project has a more finished look and the stitch design is enhanced. Blocking knit and crochet items opens up the stitches to give the pattern more definition. You can use blocking to define points for a more distinct shape. It also helps the finished item conform to the expected dimensions. It can help that sweater fit better or that shawl drape nicely. I have a pretty simple process when it comes to blocking lace crochet projects, or any project for that matter. There are many ways that knitters and crocheters “block” their finished items. … read more

Blue Bridal Lace Crochet Scarf

I love crocheting lacy scarves or shawls for new brides. I made this Summer Sprigs Lace Scarf for a dear friend on her special day.

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a friend’s bridal shower. Her wedding last weekend was Dr. Who themed, complete with original skit, and everything was silver and sapphire blue. What a memorable ceremony! I love crocheting lacy scarves or shawls for new brides. I made her the Summer Sprigs Lace Scarf with just one skein of blue Malabrigo Lace yarn and this wonderful free pattern from Make My Day Creative. The project was one of this month’s crochet-alongs in the very active Ravelry Crochet Shoulder Wrappers group.  This pattern was quick and enjoyable, and the finished scarf is so light and airy. The Flowers and Tiles Top has been added to my wardrobe and I’m very pleased! This crochet pattern is worked in motifs with a ribbed border. The ribbing around the edges took a long time, and almost as much yarn as all of the motifs. The ribbing was designed to be knitted, but I used crochet post stitches to imitate the knit look. If you’re interested in the details on how I worked it out, you can visit my project page on Ravelry for more info. Download the pattern to crochet one too. Pattern: Flowers … read more

Thread Crochet Doilies

Thread crochet doilies and small table runners make great portable or warm-weather projects. I used free patterns that I found online to create these two.

I’ve really been digging thread crochet lately. The open and lacy stitch patterns are loose and quick to work up, and it’s such a contrast from the tighter wearable items I usually make. After finishing these doilies, I picked up my regular ‘H’ hook and some worsted-weight yarn, and it felt like thick rope in my hands. It’s nice to switch it up sometimes! Doilies and small table runners make great portable or warm-weather projects. Both of these doily patterns are available for FREE online!
